An update to the recent news stories has revived my old and ignored blog…

Moments ago, the WebRadiance server was spotted for the first time since Friday lying in a gutter, in the early hours of this morning, but has not been seen since. As reported on WebRadiance.com (from our far more reliable temporary server), our main server has had some trouble:

Guess what? Our server went out drinking and apparently took a short cut through a shady neighborhood on its way home. We’re out looking for it and hope to have her home safe and sound very soon.

Seriously? Well our server may well be fine, but we don’t know. Unfortunately our hosting company are moving their data center, and while this (apparently) shouldn’t present a problem we’re having big trouble sorting it out. Hopefully WebRadiance should be back soon and hopefully nothing has gone wrong elsewhere. If you’re desperate for your WR fix, then this blog’s comments system may somehow reconnect you with your fellow WR members… at least until we get the site back up!

Java is 12 today

I’ve posted about Java’s birthday on our web development forum. It’s hard to believe it’s 12 years old and that Java has so many uses.

Moving WebRadiance to a new server

May 23rd, 2007, 11:54

I am still in the process of moving webradiance.com to a new server and it seems to be taking forever! The biggest problems have been with the ‘chat’ section of the website, which is ironic as it is the least important. We are using PHP Free Chat to provide the chat and seem to be having a big problem integrating it into IPB. The fact that the script also creates new files on the file system to cache its settings, but that those files are owned by ‘nobody’ and cannot easily be deleted has been a major pain.

Hopefully it’ll all be sorted out soon and I can get back to adding new features to the site instead…

Security-hacks.com has a nice article about the top free 15 SQL injection scanners. The article simply lists the scanners and any relevant details. It’s been a while since I’ve used a SQL injection scanner and I didn’t realise that there were this many. Many of them are also automated and quite intelligent, while others simply use a brute-force approach. It’s probably time that I tested some of my recent programming for security holes and when I do, I’ll post the results here.

Well, it’s been far too long since I posted and much has happened. But at least I’ve got a good excuse… nobody reads this anyway, right?

I’ve got my last exam ever today! My last year of University is almost over and I can’t say I’m sad to see it go. I wish I had chosen a degree more finely-suited to what I wanted to do when I leave, but unfortunately I didn’t and so much of the material was simply not of interest to me. Computer Science is clearly a very broad subject! So now it’s all about job applications and earning some money for a change, which will make a large change to accruing more student debt.

Dell has been in the news a lot too recently. Firstly they had to resurrect Windows XP, as it seems far too many people didn’t want to leave it in search of the ‘wonders’ of Windows Vista. I can’t say I blame them. Vista is hugely expensive for what is (for the end user) an almost featureless upgrade. Sure, there’s some tweaks under the hood and some better security, but those are features that should have really been in Windows to begin with!
Secondly, Dell have adopted Ubuntu as alternative to Windows when buying their new PCs. It’s nice to see Linux finally gaining some good ground from a major supplier, but I’ll be surprised if Dell push these PCs as much as their Windows counterparts. Technically it should give consumers much cheaper PCs but then I also wouldn’t be surprised if Dell pocket the extra cash, rather than pass on the saving to the consumer.

Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) has also been released! The upgrade went very smoothly for me on two PCs, with no problems except for the new version of Amarok refusing to start with my old configuration. I’m still amazed that upgrades and the addition of new features can occur so smoothly. Well done Ubuntu!

When I have some time, I might post about getting Ubuntu to work on my media PC. It’s been a challenge to say the least!

Ooh-err missus

Well, the site is officially naked and to be honest it looks ok. I need to post more frequently but when there’s nothing particularly interesting to post about… oh well…

Naked for a day

March 19th, 2007, 15:39

Well, not me, but this website (much to the relief of millions). To support the First annual CSS naked day, this website along with thousands of others will have no stylesheet on April the 5th. The day is aiming to promote web standards and good semantic markup; something that all websites should have so, especially to allow people with disabilities to use your website.

I’m confident that my site will still work fine, but it’ll just be a little ugly. You can see how any website on the internet looks without stylesheets by using the ‘Web Developers’ toolbar in Firefox, or switching from ‘Author Mode’ to ‘User mode’ in Opera.

Religion and Web Development?!

March 10th, 2007, 18:03

Religion and Web Development are not the sort of subjects you’d expect to go together. Thankfully, they don’t, but on WebRadiance, the web development forum that I co-run, the topic of religion was finally raised. I must admit, the religious ideals of the regular members on WebRadiance has been something that I’ve wondered about for some time. Indeed, it’s a topic which I haven’t even raised with my fellow admins, one of whom I’ve known for nearly a decade. Is it surprising that the topic of religion doesn’t come up in public between groups of people on a regular basis? It’s the sort of topic which usually comes up, in the pub, after a few drinks (like many incredible philosophical conversations that I’ve had). It’s entirely ironic then, that the topic was started by a young Christian who was simply being nosey!

It’s clear that even the most vocal of us are a little prudish when it comes to speaking up about our religious beliefs. I was surprised that my fellow Atheist friends (most of which I didn’t even know were Atheists before the discussion) were (at least to begin with) the quietest of all those who participated in the discussion. Perhaps this is due to the way in which Atheists are so often seen in a bad light, for no particular reason other than the fact they’re atheists. To be fair, everyone seemed particularly quiet to begin with, with the exception of a few of the hardcore (myself included!).

I think most people were simply trying to avoid conflict, which religious belief seems to so easily begin. Thankfully, the WebRadiance community are all intelligent and thoughtful and although I think a few eyebrows were raised at the various opinions and arguments on offer, the discussion remained clean and inoffensive and nobody was upset!

Though perhaps we all got a bit wrapped up in it. The topic of religion is clearly an important one and it does affect how we live our lives, but it seems that most of us use common sense and are sensible enough to live good lives regardless of our backgrounds and beliefs. I won’t say I didn’t find some of the arguments and reasoning put forward by some of the more vocal Christians baffling, but I think I can understand their reasons for believing what they do, however misguided I believe they are.

But it took WeeManDan’s story to really wake us all up and remind us of our similarities and how important they are. I imagine the topic will now die out as I think all of those involved have realised that we’ve come as far as we can without offending, but I do have to wonder if the need to offend may become a requirement in the coming years if religion continues to be the problem that I believe it to be.

BitTorrent download service launched

March 6th, 2007, 12:20

BitTorrent.com has relaunched as a content download service. I was quite excited at the possibliity of heading over there and downloading films, tv shows, music and games, but guess what? It’s all ‘US-only’. Yup, I can’t find anything I can actually download. Although let’s face it, I probably couldn’t download and view any of it on Linux anyway, as it’d be filled with DRM. When is the rest of the world going to get a decent download service? Back to the drawing board then…

According to Slashdot, there’s an increased tendency for the word ‘Evolution’ to be avoided in scientific papers and grants to avoid controversy.

To me, this seems to be pandering to the religious masses, who appear to have a big problem with evolution. Many religious people fail to understand evolution entirely, but it appears that those that do fear it so much that it’s simply becoming the ‘e-word’.

Whatever happens, I think it’s dangerous to allow any part of society to suppress an idea, or even in this case (it seems) simply a word, whatever it’s use. It’s especially dangerous, in this case, when that word and it’s associated concept is the best theory ever to explain the origin of all life and has a huge amount of evidence.
